The Lord of the Rings TV series might be coming to Amazon

Amazon is in discussions to acquire a Lord of the Rings TV series. Netflix is also reported in discussions for the rights to the show.

Warner Bros. is shopping the rights to a Lord of the Rings TV series and Amazon is in discussions to make it happen, according to a report from Deadline Hollywood.

If Amazon does acquire the rights, it will be, by far, the biggest Amazon original series to date. It’d also be most expensive TV series of all time. According to the report, to acquire the rights, Amazon would have to put up at least $200-250 million. Deadline is reporting that amount does not include any of the other expenses that go into making the series, including production expenses, actor and director contracts, etc.

At the time of publishing, Netflix and HBO have also expressed interested, although Deadline is reporting that HBO withdrew from discussions earlier. If this series is to happen, it will be for Netflix or Amazon.

I think this is a great idea by Amazon and Warner Bros. I’m on the bandwagon, post-Game of Thrones, that any of these epic book series, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc., should be made into TV shows. There’s so much to break down in these books, and movies definitely do not do them justice.
