Academy Awards galore were showered upon Shakespeare in Love including Gwyneth Paltrow for Best Acrtess, Judi Dench for Best Supporting Actress, and Best Picture among four others. Though you might not expect it to be a comedy, the film perfectly blends a riveting romance at the end of the 16th century with delightful characters and a beautiful story.
The tale starts with Shakespeare as he’s trying to write his next play, but he cannot find the inspiration to do so. Enter Viola de Lesseps, a woman promised to marry a Lord. Viola hides her identity as a woman at first so that she may act in the theatre and be a part of one of Shakespeare’s plays. After her true identity is revealed, though, the couples forbidden partnership on stage unfolds, inspires a classic work of literature, and makes for one of the best romantic comedy movies ever created.
While this certainly isn’t a feel-good romantic comedy from start to finish, there are plenty of laughs as well as real emotions brought about by Shakespeare in Love.
