There is no doubt the wait for Invincible Season 2 was excruciating. It took more than two years for the series to arrive. Granted, part of that was due to the strike action in the summer of 2023, but a lot of it came down to the process of animation.

Robert Kirkman talked to The Direct during SDCC 2024 and explained the reason for the long wait. He also gave some great news for those worrying about the wait for Invincible Season 3.

Robert Kirkman explained the length of time it takes for animation

According to Kirkman, the time that it takes to produce animated shows is the main reason for the long wait for Invincible Season 2. He explained that it takes three years to get the full production done and ready for fans to watch.

This could explain the reason for the split season as well. It’s possible that the first half of the season was ready in time for November, but not the second half of the season. The second half of the season came out three years after the first.

The wait for Invincible Season 3 won’t be as long

Kirkman keeps saying that we won’t need to wait as long for the third season of the series. This is all due to Amazon giving the series a two-season renewal. After the immediate success of the first season, Amazon renewed Invincible for two seasons. Kirkman explains that this was important to be able to write the seasons together and be able to handle the animation at the same time.

If the renewal had only been for one season, there would have likely been a long wait for Season 3. It looks like Amazon understands this because there was a renewal for one more season during SDCC 2024. The early Season 4 renewal means that work will be able to start up while doing some of the work on Season 3, cutting down the wait for that.

We’re also seeing other animated shows land multiple seasons renewals. Hazbin Hotel got a multi-season renewal during SDCC 2024.

We don’t know when Invincible Season 3 will be out yet, but Kirkman has made it clear we should look out for an update from Amazon. An update on a release date could come as early as this year.
