There were some excellent movies out in 2019. Some of them just don’t feel old enough to be turning five this year, though.

Well, we’ve already made you feel old once. Now it’s time to make you feel old again. We’re going back to 2019 to check out the releases. Just how many do you remember watching in theaters?

Just Mercy

Michael B. Jordan took on the role of Bryan Stevenson in Just Mercy, a biopic based on the life of the Harvard graduate. Bryan travelled to Alabama to defend those wrongful condemned and those who couldn’t afford proper representation. One of Bryan’s first cases was of Walter McMillian, who had been sentenced to Death Row in 1987 for a murder he said he didn’t commit.

In fact, there was evidence to prove his innocence. That didn’t stop him from being found guilty and sentenced to execution. Bryan was not willing to let an innocent man die if he could help it, and so  he set out tireless fights to save McMillian’s life. This movie showcases that fight.

Knives Out

If you like quirky whodunits, then you’ll love Knives Out. Daniel Craig takes on the role of Detective Benoit Blanc, who is pulled into the case of a wealthy patriarch who definitely did not die of natural causes. The detective needs to figure out who killed him.

It’s never easy to figure out murder. It’s even harder when all the suspects seem to have a reason to kill their wealthy father for the inheritance. Can Detective Blanc get through the mess of red herrings and suspicion to figure out the truth?

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

There’s another crime movie from 2019 that you’ll want to watch, and this is one to watch with the kids. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu sees Pikachu as a literal detective. Well, sort of. The Pokemon work with the police, and Pikachu’s human has gone. He wants to get to the bottom of what happened.

Pikachu is joined by Tim, Detective Harry Goodman’s son, who also wants to get to the bottom of his father’s disappearance. It turns out that Tim and Pikachu can work extremely well together. Tim is the only human able to understand Pikachu.

After

Would you like a steamy romance? The After books are certainly popular for readers, and all five have been turned into movies. It’s hard to believe that the first movie came out five years ago!

After brings us the story of Tessa, who enters her first year of college. She wants to succeed in her career, but she is also ready to experience life as a college student. That takes her to a party, where she comes across Hardin, who seems to get everything he wants. As Tessa and Hardin’s worlds collide, the two enter a somewhat toxic but steamy relationship.

After is available to rent or buy on Amazon Instant Video. You can watch it on Prime Video in Canada.

Guns Akimbo

Sometimes, you just need a fun action movie that is absolutely absurd. The best thing about Daniel Radcliffe now is that he isn’t afraid to do crazy movies, and that’s led to Guns Akimbo.

In this world, there’s a real life “game” where two people are forced to fight to the death. Only not all of them are given a choice, and that’s what Radcliffe’s character finds. He is thrown into the world when his hands are literally nailed to two guns. Dressed in only his boxers, a dressing gown, and fluffy slippers, he needs to find a way to survive and shut the game down.
