Amazon Prime Video has made a decision about one of its 2021 shows. I Know What You Did Last Summer Season 2 is not going to happen.

It didn’t take long for Amazon to bring some bad news to fans of the YA horror series I Know What You Did Last Summer. The show is the first cancellation of 2022 for the streamer, and it came two months after the release of the first season finale.

Deadline confirmed the disappointing news. What the publication didn’t share was the exact reason why the series was canceled. We can take some guesses though.

Why was I Know What You Did Last Summer canceled?

The best guess is ratings. While streamers don’t have the same “live TV ratings” that affect the show, they still need to make sure enough people are watching to justify a second season. With the weekly release format, it’s important that people keep tuning in each week for the new episodes in a timely manner.

There are chances that this didn’t happen with the horror series. While there were some positive comments after the first three episodes, the social noise for the show did dip each week. Sure, it had a passionate fanbase, but that fanbase was small. While social media isn’t the best idea of the number of people watching via the streamer (numbers that aren’t released unless the streamers want to release them), it is a good idea to see just how many people are likely watching.

What does this cancellation mean for the YA genre?

Prime Video has been trying to break into the YA genre. It managed it successfully with The Wilds and there is the animated series Fairfax, which is in the middle of a two-season pickup. However, it’s struggled with other shows.

I Know What You Did Last Summer joins Panic as being canceled after one season. However, both shows did end with mostly satisfying conclusions. Panic didn’t really have a second season in it when you look at the way it ended, while I Know What You Did Last Summer did mostly give us answers to the burning questions.

This isn’t going to affect the attempts to break into the genre, though. There are still some YA shows in the works that we’re excited about, especially The Summer I Turned Pretty.
