5 must-watch movies on Amazon for September 22, 2021
When Harry Met Sally
The romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally was released in 1989 and stars Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally. The film follows their friendship from college to the present day.
They don’t start as the best of friends, but over time things change. It is a hilarious look at the age-old question of whether or not men and women can just be friends.
The film is written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner with a supporting cast of Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby.
Knives Out
Knives Out was released in 2019 and will eventually have two sequels. This is a modern whodunit film that received critical and commercial acclaim.
Patriarch Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead, and his whole dysfunctional family and staff are suspects. Enter in PI Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) and his partner Lieutenant Elliot (Lakeith Stanfield). They will interview, investigate and get to the bottom of who murdered Thrombey.
This all-star cast makes this a MUST-see film. Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, Riki Lidnhome, Frank Oz, K Callan, M. Emmet Walsh, and Marlene Forte.
The Goonies
In 1985 The Goonies was released, and this film is still a favorite today. People who grew up on this film in the ’80s have now introduced it to their children and grandchildren, carrying on the legacy of One-Eyed Willie.
This film starred many teen actors who went on to do amazing things in their careers. Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan.
The film follows a group of teens’ adventures through underground tunnels created by the legendary pirate, One-Eyed Willie. All while trying to maneuver through his booby traps and being chased by the criminal family, The Fratellis.
Hocus Pocus
The Sanderson sisters, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, respectively, are accidentally resurrected on Halloween night. Hocus Pocus is a great comedy film that didn’t receive critical acclaim but has since received quite the cult following.
On Oct. 31, 1693, The Sanderon Sisters were caught putting a spell on a young girl so they could absorb her youth to retain their own. They are hanged for the crime but not before they cast a spell that will resurrect the witches if a virgin lights the black candle on All Hallows Eve.
In the present day, Max and his family move from L.A. to Salem, Massachusetts. On Halloween night, his new friend Allison shows him the Sanderson house and convinces him that the Sanderson Witches are real. Max lights the black candle, resurrecting the witches, and things spiral from there.
It is a fun family film with a P.G. rating, so use that guide before showing it to the really young ones.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
Another tremendous ’80s fall film is E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. This film was produced and directed by Steven Spielberg.
A group of alien botanists visit Earth and accidentally leave one of their own behind. He befriends a young boy and his family, and they try to keep his presence a secret. The film follows all the funny antics of an alien and kids as they teach him earthling ways.
E.T., as the alien dubs himself, can create a communication device to call home, but no one is aware the government is tracking his every move.
Another great film set in the fall with a fun Halloween scene starring Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, and C. Thomas Howell.
