What is the new Prime Video Watch Party from Amazon?

If you’re still in a social bubble that doesn’t include some of your best friends, it may have been difficult to watch your favorite shows together. Amazon is making it a little easier with the Prime Video Watch Party.

The what? On July 11, Amazon announced that it was introducing what it was calling the Prime Video Watch Party. It’s a great way to connect with friends while you all watch the same shows and movies.

More from Amazon

Just to note, this is only available in the U.S. right now. Everyone who wants to join in will also need to be a Prime member. However, I’m not sure I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have Amazon Prime considering the shopping, Twitch, Amazon Music, Kindle Unlimited, and more!

Another downside is that it’s only available through desktop browsers, except Safari, right now. There’s no support for it through mobile devices. What I’m not sure is if you can use it through your mobile internet if you switch to the desktop view of the site. It won’t be as easy to navigate but could be an option for those who use mobile devices while watching (and who doesn’t?).

What is Prime Video Watch Party?

Think of this as like live-tweeting but not tweeting out into a void. You’re guaranteed interaction with your friends. Plus, you can be a little more at ease when you’re chatting with friends and not with strangers, right?

You start a Watch Party with up to 100 friends or family members. Yeah, you can make this massive if you want!

While the movie plays, you just drop your comments in the Watch Party chat. Your friends will see them and can respond.

How do you make sure everyone is involved at the same time? That’s always been one of the big problems with streaming online and chatting with friends, right? Amazon has you covered.

The host gets to control when the movie starts. You wait for everyone who wants to join to get into the chat and get themselves ready—I’d recommend setting a time as you would have in the movies or something—and then the host presses play.

Throughout the movie, the host can pause and resume the movies if they want. If someone in the group needs to pause, just drop a message for the host.

Only movies that are on Prime as part of the membership are available in the Prime Video Watch Party right now. This could change to rented or bought movies in the future, but it could be difficult if not everyone has access to that. It makes more sense to keep it to just Prime additions. It’s not just about Prime Originals, though. You can watch the likes of Knives Out with your friends.
