Here’s a look at the promo and synopsis for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 2. If you view these and their breakdowns as spoilery, this is your warning to turn away. we’re going straight into the five top takeaways.

5. Raul is on the verge of death

Tiago shot his brother but didn’t kill him. Raul lays in a hospital bed fighting for his life, but it looks like he’s fighting a losing battle. There’s a clip in the Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 2 at the end that shows someone behind Raul and Tiago’s mother. It looks like Santa Muerte, which suggests that death is coming to Raul.

Could it be that she has something to say to Maria? Maybe she will offer a bargain. Santa Muerte says that she doesn’t have the heart for the living, but she’s already shown preference to young Tiago, and she certainly looked thoughtful after Maria summoned her. So, what is she at the hospital for?

4. Sister Molly Finnister appears

We saw sister Molly Finnister in the trailer for the series, but she didn’t appear in the first episode. She’s going to be in this episode, and it looks like Tiago starts to get close to her.

She asks if Tiago believes in miracles. There’s a hint that not only does she believe but that she has seen them happen. Has she even caused them to happen? Is she a good supernatural force in this world of evil and upset?

3. Alex continues to push Councilman Townsend

Alex (one of Natalie Dormer’s human forms) continues to push Councilman Townsend into action. She’s the driving force behind him, arranging necessary meetings and encouraging him to drive our the Mexicans.

With the city suffering from political discord, now could be the right time for Townsend to push action through. At least, that’s what Alex wants, as Magda continues to prove that humans will destroy themselves.

2. Lewis is trying to protect Tiago’s brother

During the Penny Dreadful: City of Angel Episode 2 promo, Tiago asks his partner if he saw who shot him. We know that Lewis did. He knows exactly who Raul was. However, he chooses to say no.

It’s a weighted answer. Lewis warns Tiago not to say anything. By saying or even hinting that it was Raul, Raul will get into far more trouble than he already is. There’s also the risk of a lot of people turning against Tiago due to him being Raul’s brother. Lewis doesn’t want anything happening to either of them.

Why is Lewis protecting them? I feel like there’s more to him than just nobody wanting to be partners with Tiago.

1. Lewis’s investigations into the Third Reich continue

At the end of the premiere episode, we saw that Lewis is investigating the Third Reich. Those investigations will continue throughout Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Episode 2. They probably won’t come to a head yet, but it’s clear that Lewis is in dangerous territory.

How much does Lewis know about the Third Reich right now? We’re in 1938. While some of the racist ways were starting to be known, not all of them were. It will be interesting to know Lewis’s part and connection in all this.
