If you’re looking for an excellent wartime drama, Foyle’s War is a must-watch. The first season is on Amazon Prime Video right now.

Some wartime dramas stand out more than others. That’s certainly the case for Foyle’s War. The first season is now available to stream with your Prime membership, with other seasons available on Acorn TV. Now is the time to get binging.

Why does it belong on the list? How about the fact that it takes the TV crime drama genre and flips it? Rather than just being set in the past and offering old-school detective techniques, Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle also has the Second World War working against him.

Set in Hastings, Sussex, we get a look at what wartime was like in Britain. There’s the rationing, the constant fear of the Germans bombing the country, and children being sent to the countryside to remain as safe as possible. Then there’s the British military or intelligence service that can step into cases due to the people involved.

We have cases of murder, profiteering, and the black market sales to work through. Foyle has to go up against some of the highest-ranking people in the country but is continually focused on justice.

Throughout the first six seasons, we see time during the war. However, the series was abruptly canceled and then revived by ITV. The seventh season brings us to after the war, seeing Foyle work after retirement. Now he’s working for MI5 on Cold War espionage.

If you’ve never watched Foyle’s War, now is the time to check out the first season. You’ll be immediately hooked and then need to get an Acorn TV subscription to watch the other six seasons.
