Vida follows the lives of two Mexican-American sisters who head back to their childhood home after the death of their mother. Not only have the two sisters not seen each other in years, but they haven’t been home since leaving. One sister, in particular, walked away after her mother couldn’t accept her for who she is.
It’s soon clear that their mother had a bunch of her own secrets, including the fact that she was a lesbian. The sisters find out that the inheritance isn’t just split between the two of them but with their mother’s widow, too. It brings out mixed feelings and confusion, as the two sisters work through all the news and their grief.
The first season is a raw look at gentrification and the oppression of women and the Latinx community. One thing that makes this show so powerful is that it’s not white people telling the story of people they don’t know but the writers’ room is filled with Latinx writers.
It brings a powerful mix of drama and comedy. The lives are messy and our lead characters aren’t perfect. Their stories draw you in.
