With more YA books being developed into a series, Amazon should turn its attention to the Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake. Here’s why.
More and more production studios are turning to books to find shows and movies to create. Amazon is doing the same, ordering adaptions of The Boys graphic novels and various series in the crime genre, such as Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher. It’s time to turn the attention to the fantasy book series, Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake.
Back in 2017, Fox did acquire the movie rights to the book series. However, this is a series of novels that would work better as a TV show. And I could see it working better on Amazon. Also, we haven’t heard anything about the movies since the 2017 news of the rights. It’s possible that the rights could have expired by now.

But why adapt such a book when new content could be created? The book series has a following. There are fans who would love to see the books, which starts with a story about three sisters who all have equal rights to a throne and will need to kill each other to claim the crown, turned into something on the TV.
There’s a lot to come from the book series for fans of the fantasy genre. Here are my top reasons why this is a series for Amazon.
It offers strong female characters
In the current #MeToo climate, there is a lot of focus on female-driven stories. You can’t get any more female-driven than a story about three queens. While it does involve the three of them fighting against each other, there are other storylines that take place. There is a story of sisterhood and of finding yourself.
And it’s not just the three main characters who offer the strong female storylines. Each queen has female friends connected to their story, females who have their own storylines, their own pasts, and their own personalities.
There’s plenty of source material
Three Dark Crowns is just the first novel in the series. There are currently four books in the main series and then three others that take place before the first one. If anyone was worried about running out of source material, this is not the series to be concerned about.
The source material doesn’t give all the information away at once. The first book is a little slow, but as a TV series it could work really well. There are stories of the past that could be woven in well, whether it’s of the sisters’ pasts connecting or of past queens.
It will require a big budget
A TV series surrounding the Three Dark Crowns source material is going to require a big budget. This is possibly why a movie has been considered first. However, turning it into an eight- or 10-episode story would probably be better. To do that, it needs to go to a streaming service.
Streaming services have the larger budget to offer. There tends to be a worry that shows will be canceled after three or four seasons, but that wouldn’t be a problem for Three Dark Crowns. Four books, four seasons. It works out well.
There are characters for everyone
As mentioned, it’s not all about the three queens. There are other characters, characters for all viewers. Queen Katherine has older characters to help older viewers connect with someone. Then there are younger or naive characters for the younger viewers. There are also wiser or misguided characters to keep storylines going.
It’s not all about the women. There are male characters and various love stories going on. Those who enjoy seeing romantic relationships develop as well as the hope of familial relationships, there is something for you in this series.
A series gives it time to build
While movies can be great to keep the budget down, there’s a lot of world-building in Three Dark Crowns. That’s especially the case for the first book. It takes 75% of the book to get to “The Quickening,” which is an extremely important plot point in the story.
An adaptation of this series needs time to build. It needs to allow for the world to develop and for the characters to tell their stories. We need to feel the threat against all three queens, and not just form themselves. A series is the best way to do this.
