The Star Trek movies started with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, released in 1979. This was a feature originally suggested in 1969, but it was only after the cancellation of the original series that production studios saw the potential in the movie.

Yet, the movie nearly didn’t happen. Paramount wanted to bring the series back as a TV show instead, until the success of Star Wars in 1977. It was soon clear that sci-fi could great movies make. And so, the focus returned to the feature films. Star Trek: The Motion Picture and its follow-on movies did bring an end to the idea of a rebooted TV series, but it also lead to the spin-off, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

All six of the movies are on Amazon Prime Video, including Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, which started the run of cast members directing the movies. Leonard Nimoy directed movies three and four and William Shatner directed movie No. 5.

The movies brought new life to the franchise and were arguably the reason it was able to continue. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have seen future iterations or even the reboot movies. There’s no doubt that they belong on the list of 50 best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now.
