TiVo enters the streaming video player race against Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and more
Amazon Fire TV has some new competition in the streaming video player realm. TiVo is launching its own device, but is it too little too late?
Just as Amazon gains more competition in the streaming platform race, it now has more competition in the streaming video player race. TiVo has announced it’s bringing out a device to go up against the Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and much more.
Could it be too little too late? That is a debate right now. However, Disney Plus certainly proved that it could enter a race late and still succeed. Apple TV Plus is faring pretty well with intriguing shows and HBO Max continues to promote its upcoming streaming service.

TiVo’s device will be a little larger than the Amazon Fire Stick but a little smaller than the Android box. It will offer buyers the chance to add apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and more to the device, as well as watch live TV. According to Variety, TiVo will partner with Sling TV as the preferred way to watch live TV, but there may be the option to watch through other ways.
The new TiVo device certainly isn’t all that surprising. Just a few months ago, CEO Dave Shull announced the plan to bring a new device that would compete against Amazon Fire TV and Roku, and it would run off the Google Android system. Like Google Chromecast, the system will plug directly into the TV through the HDMI port.
To get Sling TV, a separate subscription will be required. Right now, that costs $30 per month. The TiVo device will cost $69.99 regularly but is initially available for less than $50. Subscriptions for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and other apps would also be needed.
