5 good shows on HBO to watch on New Year’s Eve 2019

Not everyone wants to watch the ball drop. Sometimes, you want to spend the evening watching some great TV shows, and HBO certainly has you covered. Whether you want something for the entire family or you’re looking for something just for the adults, there’s something to watch on New Year’s Eve 2019.

5. Sex and the City

When you want a great TV show from the past, HBO has Sex and the City. Spend New Year’s Eve watching Carrie and her friends figure out love, sex, and careers. It’s an excellent reminder that we had some positive female-focused TV shows in the late 90s and early 00s.

With six seasons, there is going to be a lot of content to get through. This is something to start your new decade right and watch throughout the month of January.

4. Westworld

HBO’s Westworld is one of the strongest shows currently available (and still going). It’s a story of finding yourself, with a sci-fi setting of robots. The robots are supposed to have their memories wiped at the end of the day, but that’s not necessarily the case.

There are currently two seasons available, giving you 20 episodes to stream during the New Year celebrations. Season 3 is coming in 2020, making now the perfect time to binge-watch if you’re still to do so.

3. Catherine the Great

Want a limited series? HBO has one from this year. Catherine the Great is the show to check out this New Year’s Eve. Helen Mirren stars as the titular character, in a four-part series based on the life of the real Russian queen. It’s set towards the end of her reign, during her affair with Grigory Potemkin, which means plenty of conflict and scandal.

With just four episodes, you’ll get through them all during New Year’s Eve with ease. Or you could opt for two on NYE and save two for New Year’s Day!

2. His Dark Materials

When you want something that the kids can get into, His Dark Materials is something to watch. The great thing about the show is that it’s only into its first season, so you can get through the majority of it in one night and finish it off during New Year’s Day.

There are many twists and turns along the way. With the snowy setting, you’ll also find it perfect for the current season.

1. True Blood

Need another great older TV show? Want something that’s more fantastical, something supernatural? Then you’ll want to check out True Blood. Like Sex and the City, there are a fair few seasons to get through, so it’s going to be something to watch throughout the month.

This isn’t going to be something for the children. You’ll want to make sure they’re snug in bed before the ball drops.
