5. A Place to Call Home

If you love Downton Abbey, then A Place to Call Home is a no-brainer. In fact, it’s a must-watch. This is an Australian version of the tale. And personally, I think it’s a little better than Downton due to some of the topics covered.

A Place to Call Home is set in the 1950s in Australia. It all starts with one woman heading back from Europe to Australia, where she sees her mother after her brother’s death. Naturally, it’s clear there is tension and it’s got something to do with her changing her name. It will take a while to figure out why there’s been a change of name.

Considering the time period, World War II comes up a lot. While Sarah Adams spent time in Europe during the time period, the Australians faced the Japanese. There are discussions of some of the events that happened during the war, especially for Dr. Jack Duncan.

Thought that was all? Oh no! There’s the Bligh matriarch who isn’t happy that Sarah has started working at the local hospital. Then there’s George Bligh’s interest in Sarah, James Bligh’s secret that causes him to consider suicide at the very start, and Anna Bligh’s love for a man who isn’t within her class.

It’s time to sit back and binge six seasons of content on Acorn TV.
