One Child Nation, Dublin Murders and more on Amazon Prime this weekend, Nov. 8
By Mads Lennon
Amazon unveils a new original documentary film about the one-child policy in China. Starz premieres its new series Dublin Murders and more this weekend.
Somehow we’re already onto the second weekend of November. That means good and bad news for members of Amazon Prime. The good news is, Season 2 of Jack Ryan was released last weekend! Now is your chance to catch up if you haven’t yet.
The bad news is that Amazon is only releasing one new item this weekend, a documentary called One Child Nation. If you have access to HBO or Starz through Amazon Video Channels, you’ll have a few extra options to watch this weekend, as well.
I recommend checking out the series premiere of Dublin Murders when it airs Sunday night on Starz.

One Child Nation (2019)
- Directors: Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang
Amazon’s latest documentary, One Child Nation, explores the socioeconomic, mental, emotional, and physical impact of the one-child policy. The policy only came to an end in 2015.
It is one of the most extreme examples of population planning in the world. Under this policy, families in China were strictly regulated and only allowed to have one child per family.
Directors Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang were both born while the statute was in effect. In this documentary film, they explore the cultural impact of the decree and how it has influenced their own lives. One Child Nation is nominated for a Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Documentary.
The Kid Who Would Be King (2019)
- Director: Joe Cornish
- Starring: Tom Taylor, Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Patrick Stewart, and Rebecca Ferguson
- Available: November 9 on HBO
For those of you that have subscribed to HBO through Amazon Video Channels, you’ll be able to watch The Kid Who Would Be King this weekend beginning Saturday, Nov. 9. This fantasy adventure film follows a young boy who miraculously discovers the legendary sword, Excalibur.
He embarks on a quest to defeat an evil enchantress and even gets to meet the mythical wizard Merlin on his travels. The Kid Who Would Be King received high praise from critics. Unfortunately, the film underperformed at the box office. Don’t let that dissuade you from watching. It’s an enjoyable movie with an air of timelessness about it.
Dublin Murders: Series Premiere
- Creator: Sarah Phelps
- Starring: Moe Dunford, Sarah Greene, Sam Keeley, Antonio Aakeel, Killian Scott, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor
- Available: November 10 on Starz
The latest series from Starz and BBC One is based on Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad book series. The eight-episode first season adapts plot elements from the first two books in the series, In the Woods and The Likeness.
This psychological thriller follows detectives Cassie Maddox and Rob Reilly as they attempt to solve the devastating murder of a young girl and learn this case could involve both of them personally. The series will premiere at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday night.
