Tell Me a Story Season 2: Everything we learned at the NYCC 2019 panel
Tell Me a Story’s cast and showrunner took to NYCC 2019 to discuss what to expect in the upcoming season. Here’s everything we learned.
Are you ready for a new season of Tell Me a Story? The second season will premiere at the end of the year, but we learned plenty about it during the New York Comic-Con 2019 panel.
The panel took place on Oct. 3, with showrunner Kevin Williamson and stars Odette Annable, Paul Wesley, Danielle Campbell, Eka Darville, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Natalie Alyn Lind attending. The actors shared a little about their roles, but a lot of the focus on was what to expect in the story.

After an exclusive world premiere of the trailer, which has now been released and included below, the panel kicked off with a chat about the show that has become an anthology series. And yes, it’s true anthology. Williams shared that at one point it was going to somehow connect to the previous season, but that’s not the case anymore.
He also shared that he was originally going to have a completely new cast. However, he has a “no a-hole policy” and really enjoyed working with Paul Wesley and Danielle Campbell, so it made sense to bring them back on for a new season.
Check out the trailer below, before we get into Tell Me a Story Season 2.
Three princesses with a twist
This season is all about the Disney princesses, but it’s going to be with some dark twists. One of the easiest twists to spot is the fact that the Beauty and the Beast storyline has a complete gender swap. Natalie Alyn Lind plays “the beast,” a young singer who is disfigured in a horrible accident.
Eka Darville will play the “beauty,” a cop who has some dark secrets of his own. This is a storyline that is all about how beauty is more than skin deep, and about how someone can love themselves after everything they’ve done. Eka also shared how cool it is to have a black man playing the “beauty” in the story, which is something that he never thought would happen. Equally, it’s cool to have a woman playing the “beast,” as it connects to “female rage.”
Sleeping Beauty is the second storyline touched on, which is definitely not a princess asleep in a tower waiting for her Prince Charming to come along. Wesley will play Tucker, a man who is engaged to Odette Annable’s character but is clearly obsessed with Danielle Campbell’s character, the Sleeping Beauty.
Cinderella is the third storyline. However, we didn’t get a chance to find out about that storyline as none of the actors were involved.
Each of the characters do seem to have names that somehow connect to their storylines. “Tucker” is linked to “tuck her in,” while Eka’s “Beau” is the first four letters of “Beauty.”
Natalie does her own singing
As a character who is a singer, there was a question about the music. Natalie will do all the singing in the series, which was an important part of the casting process.
The setting is in Nashville, which becomes a character in itself. There was a lot of talk about how the cast members could feel the spirit within the city. Nashville is no longer just about country music, but all music and that was something noted.
It’s not surprising, then, to learn that a lot of the music has been written for the series. Natalie’s songs are original, and there’s one special one that pops up in the second episode.
Plenty of research
A lot of the discussion was on the Beauty and the Beast storyline. One of the points was the research that has gone into burn survivors. This isn’t just a storyline added for entertainment value, but to show the journey that burn victims go through. It’s important to touch on the struggle, but also the empowerment behind the story.
Throughout the series, Natalie wears scar makeup and a mask. This has been an important part of the story for her, as it gets her into the character and ready to work.
Of course, Williamson has clearly also looked into the original fairytales. Eka mentioned how he loves the way that the stories were parables for children, and how in the future, he’d love to see folklore from other cultures included in the series. It sounds like Williamson is up for that.
Still filming Tell Me a Story Season 2
The second season is still partway through filming. The cast say that they’re only up to Episode 6, and things are currently still changing. They have no idea where they’re going with their characters, and that is part of the fun.
