Cloverfield started the franchise is style. Taking on the found-footage form of filming, we followed a group of friends as they attempted to make it out of a crumbling New York City after a being of skyscraper size attacked. We’d watch from the shaking camera as they’d attempt everything they could to get out alive.

One of the benefits of the story is only the fleeting glances of the monster. It throws us back to times of old, when we’d barely get to see the creature, leaving far more to the imagination. Sometimes, leaving things to the imagination makes things even scarier.

Cloverfield sits with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 77%, and it’s Certified Fresh. Audiences weren’t all that far behind, rating it with a 68% score.

The movie would kick-start the Cloverfield franchise, which would see 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox released in subsequent years, although they wouldn’t be as good.
