Amazon Channels: 3 must-see late summer TV shows
By Mads Lennon
It may be the end of summer, but summer television is finally heating up. Don’t miss out on these must-see series, all available through Amazon Channels.
The 2019 summer television season has, for the most part, been a dud. Aside from a few luke-warm shows, not many have truly stood out from the bunch (aside from returning series like Stranger Things and The Handmaid’s Tale). At least, until this week. Three of the summer’s best new series have all debuted in the span of seven days and you can watch all of them with Amazon Video Channels.
It should be noted that the networks were struggling this year with good content. All three of these standouts are on streaming services, HBO, Showtime, and CBS All Access. All three are also dark comedies. Why they didn’t move these shows to the beginning of the summer is a mystery to me but I’m happy we have them now at least!

The Righteous Gemstones
- Starring: Danny McBride, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Adam DeVine, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, and Tim Baltz
- Available on HBO through Amazon Video Channels
The Gemstone family are a world-famous and extremely wealthy group of televangelists who run a megachurch with thousands of followers. Everything they do is in the name of their lord and savior, Jesus Christ. That includes greed and sin, in addition to all their charity, of course.
The series has only aired one episode so far so you’re just in time to hop on board. Danny McBride serves as both writer and creator of the series and you can tell how much his comedy has evolved over the years. The opening scene of the series has the Gemstone boys conducting a mass baptism in a wave pool, and it’s one of the funniest moments I’ve seen on television all year.
The Righteous Gemstones airs Sunday nights at 10/9c P.M. on HBO.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida
- Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Théodore Pellerin, Ted Levine, Mel Rodriguez, and Beth Ditto
- Available on Showtime through Amazon Video Channels
Technically, On Becoming a God doesn’t premiere until Aug. 25, but Showtime has released the first two episodes of the series already for free! You can watch the premiere episode here without dropping a dime.
The series stars Kirsten Dunst as Krystal Gill, a minimum wage-earning water park employee. But when a tragedy strikes Krystal’s life, she must resort to becoming a part of the same pyramid scheme that ruined her family in the first place. She’ll have to scheme her way to the top if she hopes to make a real profit.
The series is already generating plenty of good buzz with critics, particularly for Dunst’s performance. It’s a must-watch and could easily become a dark horse contender at next year’s Emmy Awards.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida officially premieres Sunday, August 25 at 10/9c P.M. on Showtime.
Why Women Kill
- Starring: Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Alexandra Daddario, Sam Jaeger, Sadie Calvano, Jack Davenport, and Reid Scott
- Available on CBS All Access through Amazon Video Channels
If you miss the charm, whimsy, and dramatics of Desperate Housewives then rejoice! Marc Cherry has a new show on the air and it is as decadent and fantastic as ever. The dark comedy series stars Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as three wives fro three different eras who all have to contend with their husbands’ infidelity.
Goodwin plays Beth Ann, a subservient 1960s housewife who is happily married, at least until she discovers her husband cheating. Liu is a wealthy socialite in 1984 who learns her husband Karl is gay and has taken a lover.
Finally, Howell-Baptiste is a 2019 bisexual feminist in an open marriage with her husband. But their relationship is put to the test when they both begin to have feelings for the same woman. The series has only aired one episode thus far and is well worth checking out!
Why Women Kill premieres new episodes on CBS All Access on Thursdays.
