The third season of Westworld won’t be out for another year or so, but HBO released a teaser trailer before the Game of Thrones finale.

We still have a long way to go before Westworld Season 3 will grace our screens, but HBO has at least done the decent thing by releasing a new trailer for fans to obsess over!

Now that Game of Thrones is over, at least we have something to keep us occupied for a little while. Of course, the teaser doesn’t give away much but considering it was a complete surprise and it’s more than just a floating logo, I can’t complain too much.

When I saw the words “teaser” on the internet, I assumed it would be a 10-15 second video. I was pleasantly surprised to see it gave us some real footage and teased the introduction of two new characters.

Aaron Paul’s character

Playing an apathetic technician, Paul’s character is living in a somber world ruled by technology. People walk around wearing mood-changing t-shirts and outfits that can go from business chic to club attire in a matter of seconds. He describes the world as rotting from the inside. But what world is he living in? Is he actually in the “real world” or is he simply in another theme park?

Could the park have fallen into such disarray between Seasons 2 and 3 that it’s more of a techno-slum than anything else now? At the end of the trailer, he comments that for him to continue with his life, he’s going to have to find “someone or something real,” which then cues up the intro of Evan Rachel Wood as, maybe, Dolores.

It is also worth mentioning that in one moment of the trailer, Aaron Paul can be seen visiting someone in prison. He also has his life threatened and is held at gunpoint. Wherever he’s leaving is more of a dystopia than the falsely promised of utopia in Westworld.

Who is Evan Rachel Wood playing now?

The last time we saw Dolores, her consciousness had been transferred into Tessa Thompson’s character, Charlotte. So who or what is Evan Rachel Wood now? Is she an empty host running on empty? Did she get her mind back but become a shell of her former self in some damage transference? She looks worse for the wear when Aaron Paul sees her.

Also, did you notice there is some graffiti of a maze on the wall? Remember how crucial the whole maze thing was in Season 1. It was meant as a secret for the hosts to find their way to autonomy.

The fact it’s showing up again now, in this teaser, post-rebellion, can’t be a coincidence. Is that the proof we need to determine they’re still in the park? Or have the hosts just wholly altered the fabric of our society and reality? Perhaps the maze is a symbol of hope or a sign, a meeting point.
