Amazon Prime Canada is about to get Amazon Channels. What exactly will be coming to the service?

Amazon Channels is a popular addition to Amazon Prime in the United States. It offers viewers the chance to sign up to various premium cable channels all through the Amazon Prime system, reducing the number of smaller payments made throughout the month. Well, it’s finally on its way to Amazon Prime Canada.

There’s no clear date on when Amazon Channels will be added. Nor is there a full list of the Channels that will be made available – it won’t likely be the 150 channels that users can subscribe to through the U.S. system. However, Canadian Heritage is worried about what this will mean for the Canadian broadcasting system, according to iPhone in Canada.

More from Amazon Channels

The addition of Amazon Channels does come with some bad news. Right now, Bell Media has the rights to HBO, SHOWTIME, and STARZ. This means the three more popular premium cable channels won’t be added to Amazon Prime Canada. You can only get them through Crave TV in Canada.

This could change in the future. Eventually, the exclusive contract is going to come to an end. If Amazon offers a better deal than Bell, we could see the channels moving over to Amazon Prime. Alternatively, HBO, STARZ, and others could choose to allow multiple companies access to the platforms in a way that they do in the U.S.

While Canadian Heritage worries about the broadcasting companies, Bell and Rogers aren’t concerned about competition. In fact, they welcome it. Rogers even says that Amazon Prime Video will soon be available through its Ignite TV, which means Amazon Channels should come that way too.
