15 TV shows still in danger of being canceled in 2019 (and 5 Amazon should save)
In danger: The Village
Like SEAL Team, I don’t want this show to be canceled. I’m hoping that the 8 p.m. timeslot will help it fair better compared to its initial 10 p.m. and then its 9 p.m. timeslot. The Village needs to stick around.
However, the ratings haven’t been excellent. They’re about mediocre, which isn’t good. NBC has already renewed the majority of its shows. There are only a handful of spaces left in the lineup.
The good thing about NBC is that it wants to put more shows on throughout the year. It’s not afraid to reduce the number of episodes to avoid reruns and offer fans the content they want, which could work in favor of The Village.
In danger: Deadly Class
I want to say that Deadly Class Season 2 is definitely happening, but I’m just not 100% sure. I hoped that SYFY would have renewed it by now — either just before or after the first season premiere. When it didn’t, I worried about the show’s fate.
This is one of the most diverse shows without focusing too much on every single stereotype. It’s full of intriguing and colorful characters, bringing a storyline that leaves you on the edge every single episode.
And it’s one of those shows based on a graphic novel that even the original fans love. Creator Rick Remender is one of the series’ showrunners, and he’s stuck to the story but delved deeper. That’s how you do an adaptation.
The live ratings weren’t the top for SYFY and I worry they were too low to see the series renewed.
In danger: Now Apocalypse
Moving onto STARZ and it’s all about Now Apocalypse. This is one of the latest STARZ Originals to premiere and it immediately premiered to low numbers. Of course, we don’t get to see the premium cable’s subscription numbers but live ratings are usually an initially good sign of what’s going on.
I also worried when STARZ opted to release the whole season in one go on the app after a few weeks. This tells me there wasn’t much hope in fans tuning in each week — of course, it could be a way to test the waters of doing full-season releases like Amazon Prime and Netflix.
If we don’t hear anything soon about Now Apocalypse, I don’t think it’s going to get a second season.
Should save: The Gifted
The cancellation of The Gifted wasn’t all that surprising. The live numbers were down from the previous season and low for FOX overall. However, there were a number of things working against it. The biggest problem was being put up against NCIS and The Conners.
The storylines were also a little off this season. They worked better for a binge watch than a weekly release, which is why something like Amazon Prime for the show would be better.
I doubt Amazon will save the X-Men-set series. It will likely move over to Disney+. If Disney doesn’t take it, Amazon should.
