Mindy Kaling’s Late Night coming to theaters in June
Amazon Studios acquired Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, among other movies, at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s now got a June theatrical release date.
During the Sundance Film Festival 2019, Amazon Studios made some big acquisitions. One of those was Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which is a poignant movie for the current time. Amazon has now officially set the theatrical release date for the summer.
On only have to wait three more months to catch the movie. Coming on June 7, you’ll be able to see it in theaters nationwide. It will later come to Prime Video, but it’s only going to be in the United States. Out of all the deals at Sundance, Amazon only acquired the U.S. rights.

Late Night is a movie focused on a female late night show host and links to Kaling’s own personal experience as a writer for The Office. Emma Thompson is Katherine Newbury, a legendary host on a late-night talk show. When she hires her only female staff writer, played by Kaling, Katherine’s life is unexpectedly turned upside down.

Katherine’s initial decision stems from the complaints over the lack of diversity in the writer’s room. These two women are separated by generations and cultures, but they soon find a way to unite. Of course, it’s Kaling’s production and that means plenty of comedy along the way.
How does it connect to Kaling’s own experience? Well, she was the only female and person of color in the writer’s room for NBC’s The Office. It was a daunting experience, especially early on in her career, although she’s never experienced that since. This is important to show that there’s still some work to do inequality and diversity in writer’s rooms.
Considering other Amazon-acquired movies have gone to the theaters, it’s not surprising that Late Night is heading there. This is going to be one for fans of The Office, Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson, and much more.
