15. The Big Sick

Acquired from Sundance a few years ago, The Big Sick is an Amazon Prime Movie that you’ll need to watch this Valentine’s Day. Pakistani comic, Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) meets an American graduate student, Emily (Zoe Kazan). They form a friendship after she shows up at one of his standup shows and slowly their relationship blossoms.

The problem for Kumail is that his parents are traditional Muslims and he’s worried about how they’ll take to him dating an American. When Emily ends up in a coma from an illness, he starts to form a bond with her parents and suddenly, his issues don’t seem all that important.

14. The Cake Eaters

Not a Kristen Stewart fan? If you’ve only seen her in Twilight then that’s not that surprising. The Cake Eaters will make you change your mind. In this movie, she plays a chronically ill girl who just wants to live her life and experience love.

After the death of the Kimbrough matriarch, the three male survivors decide it’s time to do something to change their own lives. This is where Stewart’s Georgia comes into play, as she becomes connected to Beagle. Beagle’s brother is the boyfriend of Georgia’s grandmother, which certainly creates some tension.

13. The Lobster

What if you had to find love within 45 days or risk being transformed into an animal for the rest of your existance? That’s the setup for The Lobster. If a single person doesn’t find a mate within 45 days, they’re turned into an animal. The good news is they get to choose the animal they become but the downside is they’re an animal!

Based on the novel of the same name, it’s certainly an absurd creation. However, it’s strangely alluring. There are plenty of rules to follow in this dystopian future and steps to take to find love, but at the same time, there are some strange and traumatic consequences for not being good.

Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz star in the 2015 movie.
