Will Amazon Prime weather the streaming storm without more Originals?
More companies than ever are looking to get into the streaming game. As Netflix adds more Original content to keep fans loyal, will Amazon Prime manage it without more?
Disney, WarnerMedia, and more are starting to see what the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu have done. They want in on the streaming action and are taking more of their content away from Netflix and Amazon could be next. Netflix is Original content to weather the storm, but can Amazon Prime survive without it?
Let’s be honest, a lot of people sign up to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime for the non-original content that’s added there. Netflix did pay a substantial amount to keep Friends in 2019 to prove that. However, more are starting to add their original content that has gained popularity.

We just have to look at the likes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, and The Man in the High Castle on Amazon. Original content is becoming the reason people are remaining loyal and Netflix realizes that. But what about Amazon?
Amazon is still in the early days of adding original content. This is growing, with the likes of Hanna coming in March and A Wheel of Time adaptation. In 2018, the company saved The Expanse from cancellation and it’s making more Original movies. But there’s still a way to go to become like Netflix.
So, with more companies pulling content for their own services, will Amazon Prime be able to survive without more Prime Originals? Amazon does have a benefit over Netflix and it’s all about the Amazon Channels.
While Disney and WarnerMedia may create their own services, there is the chance that they will be made available as part of the Amazon Channels services. This would be a win-win situation for Amazon, whichever streaming service it is, and consumers. People sign up to the specific service through Amazon, the service gets customers, and the customers get all their bills in one instead of managing multiple payments.
There’s no guarantee that Disney and WarnerMedia would offer their services to become part of Amazon Channels, but there’s certainly the chance. STARZ made their service as part of Amazon Channels before their own standalone service, leading to almost half of all subscribers now coming from Amazon.
Amazon also has the ability to let people buy digital copies of movies and other TV shows through its service. Those who have chosen to cut the cord only to buy the shows they want to watch will still get that chance. They’ll be able to pay one-off for their favorite Disney movies instead of monthly for a subscription service, and there’s no way that Disney would stop digital copies of their movies being available!
Prime also comes with other benefits. There’s the two-day free shipping, the subscription to Twitch, Amazon Music, and the Kindle Library. Amazon already offers far more for its subscription compared to Netflix.
While more Prime Originals will certainly make Amazon Prime more enticing, it’s not going to be a make or break. There are other options to help the service succeed even if movies or shows are pulled.
