For Day 15 of the Christmas Countdown, it’s time to turn your attention to a historical action movie. Valkyrie is on the list from Amazon Prime Video.

On Dec. 1, Valkyrie was among the list of movies that dropped on Amazon Prime Video. It’s the latest movie on Amazon Adviser‘s Christmas Countdown, bringing you something different from the December drop each day in the runup to Christmas.

Starring Tom Cruise, Valkyrie is a historical action movie based on a true story. No, it doesn’t involve the Norse myth of the warrior women. The movie is all about Operation Valkyrie.

What is Valkyrie about?

Set in 1944, the movie is all about the July 20 plot to assassinate the Fuhrer. Yes, Nazis wanted Adolf Hitler dead and this was just one of the many plots — the most famous plot of all. Directed by Bryan Singer, Tom Cruise starred as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the leader of the plot to take down Hitler and rule the country.

Needless to say, the plot fails. We know that Hitler was never assassinated. This is a story of how the plot came to be and how it ended up failing.

Financial and critical success

While it may not be a Christmas movie, Valkyrie was released on Christmas Day in 2008! This makes it extremely worthy of being on this list for a Christmas Countdown.

If you enjoy history and you like to learn more about Nazi plots, attempts at takeovers, and see history play out on screen, then this is a movie for you. It’s certainly had mixed opinions, but that’s normal for a Tom Cruise/Nazi movie. Critics and Audience are both in agreement, which is definitely an anomaly. While critics rate it 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Audience Score is only slightly more favorable at 65%.

FInancially, this was a successful movie around the world. With a budget of $75 million, it made $83 million in the United States alone. Around the globe, the total gross was more than $200 million.
