Amazon Prime Canada now available monthly: Should you still pay yearly?
Amazon Prime Canada has finally released a monthly membership for those who want it. Overall it’s cheaper annually, but is this really the best deal?
Since the conception of Amazon Prime Canada, the service has only been available with an annual membership. Style Democracy shares that the membership is now available on a monthly basis. Finally!
There’s no doubt that only having an annual option has put a lot of people off. What if the service isn’t that great? Even with a 30-day free trial, you don’t get to try every little aspect in many cases. You may find after a couple of months that the service isn’t for you and now you’re stuck with it.
It sounds like Amazon has finally conceded that people want to pay for things on a monthly basis. So now, Amazon Canada users can pay the $79 CAD annual fee or a $7.99 CAD monthly fee.
What’s more expensive in the long run?

When you first look at it, you’re likely to choose Amazon Prime Canada’s annual membership. It works out cheaper for the year. After all, 12 months of $7.99 per month is $95.88. That’s at $16.88 difference, which will add up over the years.
But this is if you will pay the $7.99 for all 12 months. What if you’re one of those who wants to get it for six months out of the year, say between August and December? Or what if you’re one of those who want to get it only when there’s a new Prime Original on Amazon Prime Video that you want to watch?
The great thing about Amazon Prime Canada with a monthly subscription is that you’re not locked into a yearly contract. Don’t like it after a month? Just cancel and move on!
Want it for two months and then not need it for the rest of the year until your favorite show is back? Not a problem! Take it for two months (so $14.98 in total) and then cancel and leave for the next 10 months. You’ve instantly made savings.
It really depends on how you’re going to use Amazon Prime Canada. If you find you want it for the whole year, you can always switch to the yearly membership as this will work out better for you financially.
The Prime Video aspect certainly needs a lot more work, but it’s getting there. Right now, you need an Amazon, Netflix, and CraveTV subscription just to watch everything–and then you’re still missing out!
But it is slowly getting there. Moving Amazon Prime Canada to a monthly payment could be the best decision yet to get more onboard and make it worthwhile expanding.
