Amazon already has Alexa but now they’re giving her a partner in crime: Frank. Well, they may be doing if reports about the new DVR device for the streaming era are right.

It’s all about cutting the cord at the moment. People are fed up with being tied to cable companies but still want their original (scripted and unscripted) content. Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and other options have come out to help with that, but they all miss out on one thing: the DVR device for the streaming era. That’s where Frank plays a part.

Frank will possibly become Alexa’s partner in crime. Frank will allow people to record their live TV so that they can stream it to their other devices whenever they want. According to Deadline, Frank will connect to Amazon’s Fire TV in a similar way that Echo speakers connect.

Currently, viewers can watch live footage through the Amazon Channels. This opens the world of HBO, Starz, Hulu, and more directly to their Amazon devices. However, there’s no yet an option to record that programming to store for later.

Of course, there are doubts that this type of service is really needed. It’s possible to watch many of the shows the next day through Amazon Prime Video anyway. The only reason the recording would be a benefit is if people wanted to stream a couple of hours later from another device.

Bloomberg reports that the news has come from someone with insider knowledge at Amazon, but they didn’t want to be identified. This is a project that is still in the earlier stages, with Amazon not sure if it’s something to actually roll out.
