Why did Amazon cancel The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel?

For a while, it looked like ending The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel may have been a show decision. After all, we all knew that good shows have to eventually end. This was one of those shows that needed a good ending.

That’s what the series ended up getting. We didn’t just get to see Midge succeed. We got to see Susie succeed. And, of course, it was all about Midge and Susie in the end.

So, was it a show decision? It definitely wasn’t. This was an Amazon decision, but why would the streamer cancel one of its most popular and successful shows?

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was canceled due to money

It all came down to cost. Amy Sherman-Palladino shared on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that she wasn’t the one to pull the plug on the show. Amazon did, and it was due to money. Considering the timing of the cancellation and the cancellation of so many other shows at the same time, it looks like the cost of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power may have affected Amazon’s budget elsewhere.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel may not have a lot of special effects in terms of dragons and superhero powers, but it does need special effects. Period pieces require the effects afterward to get rid of modern-day elements in the footage. Think of thinks like guttering and street lamps. Road signs need to change, and more.

This work requires money. Then on top of that, you have the cost of the costumes and the cars. Despite the series being a huge success, Amazon couldn’t justify the costs anymore.

At least The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel had the chance to end the story. There were a lot of other shows canceled abruptly that fans need more of including Paper Girls and The Wilds.
