Do you need to watch the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie before the Amazon series?
It’s been a longer wait than initially anticipated, but the wait is almost over. Mr. and Mrs. Smith arrives on Prime Video at the end of the week.
What’s even better is that this is a binge-watch release. Yes, all episodes are coming at once, so you’ll be able to see the rebooted story from the 2005 movie.
Rebooted story? Does that mean you don’t need to watch the movie to understand what’s going on in the series? Let’s take a look at expectations?
Mr. and Mrs. Smith series is a reboot not a sequel
You don’t need to watch the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie to be able to understand the series. This is a reboot and not a revival. It’s not a sequel to the movie, which failed to get a sequel despite the success of the original story.
In fact, it looks like the whole way the romance for the two leads will play out is completely different to the movie. They are not a married couple with no idea they’re spies tasked with killing each other. Instead, they are two everyday people who end up getting the opportunity to become spies and assassins.
They will need to pretend to be married if they want to succeed at their mission. The mission itself isn’t as problematic as pretending that they actually love each other when they don’t even know each other. What happens if they do fail their marriage?
Would it be worth watching the movie first? Sure, you’ll get an idea of the basic story that this series is based on. We’re expecting a few Easter eggs thrown in from the movie here and there. We may even get a mention of the mission that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s characters went through and how it all went terribly wrong.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith will arrive on Prime Video on Friday, Feb. 2.
