The first entry in Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, Before Sunrise, kicks off of the most beloved arthouse film series in recent memory. Trading a massive production, a by-the-book script, and an overfilled supporting cast, Linklater’s romantic dramedies opt for a loose structure, raw emotion, and a palpable realism.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as Jesse and Celine, a pair of strangers who meet on a Vienna train and allow their chance meeting to lead them away. They spend the remainder of their time together roaming around Vienna and engaging in an enthralling back-and-forth dialogue. It’s crazy how compelling and completely romantic a movie about two people walking and talking can be.
