The first two seasons of Upload were binge releases, but Amazon changed tactic with Season 3. Did the weekly release work?

Amazon has tested out a few release models in recent years. The binge release model was the first, following the way that Netflix released content. However, the streamer has seen some success with the weekly release model. Just look at how The Boys Season 2 performed with the weekly release, despite fans review bombing the show purely for this release decision.

Yet, Upload opted for the binge release for the first two seasons. That changed with the third season. The show released two episodes per week, giving fans something to discuss between episodes about the way the show was going.

Was the Upload Season 3 release model a success?

Greg Daniels discussed the release model with TVLine, sharing that streaming is constantly changing so it’s hard to say what will come next with future seasons. He also admitted that right now, he doesn’t know if the weekly release model worked.

One of the reasons to choose the weekly model was due to fans saying the second season was too short. It was only seven episodes, and the episodes were only around 30 minutes. It was a quick stream and then the long wait for the third season. So, many opted for the weekly release to help spread out the eight-episode season.

The weekly model has worked well for other shows. If it didn’t, Amazon would return to the binge model for everything. It’s clear that this method is keeping people engaged for longer. There has been a benefit to the weekly release model on broadcast.

Of course, things could change in the near future. We have no idea what the SAG strikes and the new contract will mean for the way streaming networks work. This is going to be interesting in the next year or so.
