Why was The Peripheral unrenewed by Prime Video?
The Peripheral was originally renewed for a second season. Things have changed. Why has Amazon unrenewed the sci-fi series?
When The Peripheral arrived in fall 2022, and it didn’t take too long for Amazon to give it a second season. Loosely based on the book of the same name by William Gibson, Chloë Grace Moretz made it clear that she is an actress to keep a very close eye on.
The series brought two timelines, both set in our future, to life. We got to see a conspiracy, a dystopian future, and what technology could look like years from now. The first season ended with a major cliffhanger, so we were certainly happy to see the renewal. However, that’s all changed.
Amazon announced that it wasn’t going ahead with the second season of The Peripheral after all. A League of Their Own Season 2 is also now not going ahead.
Why did Amazon cancel The Peripheral?
If you remember when the pandemic first started, a lot of streamers and networks decided to “unrenew” shows. Some of them were in production, while others had just started pre-production. The delays with the pandemic would mean too many costly delays for the shows.
Well, that’s the same thing here. Amazon has decided that the delays due to the current strike action will cause too many delays for the freshman shows. The Peripheral was set to start production this year for a 2024 release. With the WGA strike, production couldn’t even start, and now it’s looking more and more likely that we won’t see the season until 2025.
Now, fans of the series are willing to wait. Amazon is not. It already has plans for 2025, and delays in the 2024 strategy will affect the 2025 strategy. It ends up being bad news for everyone.
The Peripheral is available to stream on Prime Video.
