The Horror of Dolores Roach is the Amazon series to look out for this week. What is this new series about, and is it worth the watch?

There’s a new Amazon series arriving at the end of the week. It’s all about Justina Machado back on our screens, and this time as a woman who has done time.

Oh yes! The series is based on the hit Spotify podcast series, which was also originally created as a one-woman play, called Empanada Loca. Aaron Mark created the play, and he has also written and directed the original podcast episode. Yes, he was involved in the Amazon series, penning the pilot script.

Worried about who is behind it? Don’t be. Gloria Calderón Kellett is a name that will stand out for all the right reasons. One Day at a Time was brilliant and With Love continued that excellence. Now it’s time for another one.

The Horror of Dolores Roach synopsis

So, what is the series about? Well, it has a Sweeney Todd theme to the story. That includes the cannibalism from that original story. It also includes love, betrayal, and the survival of the fittest. Oh, and weed. We can’t forget that part!

Machado plays Dolores Roach, who has just spent 16 years in prison. She returns to Washington Heights, which has been gentrified since she’s been locked up. She ends up reuniting with Luis, played by New Amsterdam‘s Alejandro Hernandez. They were old stoner friends, and he’s the one who offers her a place to stay and some work. She’ll be a masseuse in his empanada shop’s basement.

Soon, Dolores realizes that she needs to take drastic steps if she wants to survive. If you know Sweeney Todd, you may guess those drastic steps.
