Walker Independence has been canceled by The CW after just one season. The series is being shopped around. Should Amazon save the series?
While Walker Independence has been canceled, the fight for the series isn’t over. The show is being shopped around, and this opens the door for multiple streamers to fight for it. It means Amazon could look at whether this is a series to pick up or not.
Usually, we see Netflix step in to save a show. Amazon has done it before, with The Expanse as the most notable save, but not often. That doesn’t mean it can’t look at this period western and decide it’s a good fit. It could be a good option.
Why was Walker Independence canceled?
Of course, it is important to look at why a show was canceled first. Is it due to low ratings? Remember that the broadcast networks only look at the U.S. live ratings, while streamers will want to know what international viewership is like. That’s something that we don’t get access to.
What we do know is that this series became a casualty of the Nexstar deal. When Nexstar took over The CW, it made it clear that only a handful of shows would be renewed. In fact, only a couple of shows would remain, and it looks like those couple are All American and Walker. This prequel spin-off ended up becoming a casualty of something it had no control over.
Why Walker Independence fits Amazon
Before the show is saved anywhere, the fit for the streamer will need to be considered. This is a period western aimed at the 18-49 audience. It could be the perfect fit for Amazon as it works to get into to the YA market.
We already know Outer Range performed well, so it could be worth having another western on the streamer. Then there’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel doing well, suggesting that people are interested in period shows. We know Amazon is working to get into the YA market but is struggling, so a show that already has a following could help with that. There are a lot of reasons Amazon should save the show when it comes to suitability.
Walker Independence is available to stream on HBO Max at the moment.
