The Next Girl by Pip Drysdale is certainly something to read if you love seeing protagonists get revenge. It does get a little out there, though.

Disclaimer: I got a free copy of The Next Girl by Pip Drysdale from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

When it comes to revenge stories, The Next Girl by Pip Drysdale is certainly something to check out. It follows Billie, a paralegal who ends up fired from her job due to one mistake in a case. That mistake isn’t even her fault, but it’s all put on her.

So, what does she do? Well, she decides that it’s time to get revenge on her own. This certainly takes her down a twisty path that sometimes gets a little hard to believe, but it’s a wild ride from start to finish.

What is The Next Girl by Pip Drysdale about?

The novel follows Billie, and we pick right up where the revenge starts. You see, she’s made a mistake in a case. A witness lied on the stand, and now Billie is the one paying the price for that. That leads to her firm’s case falling through, and so, she ends up deciding she needs to get revenge.

And what a revenge story it is. She goes after one man, but things take a turn when that man turns up dead. Who did it, and why? Will Billie have to prove that she is innocent?

We get the story through Billie’s eyes, getting a good look inside her head. One thing I love is that we jump through timelines as we learn about her past and what drove her to seek revenge on people in the first place. Honestly, there are times that I would love to be Billie for her vigilante justice, but there are times I’m glad I’m not that hot mess.

The Next Girl review

For those who love adrenaline-filled books, this is definitely for you. There isn’t a spot where the story slows down. Everything that we’re told about Billie is important to understand her psyche and why she does what she does. It’s also crucial to help figure out the murder mystery in the story.

Yes, the plot gets a little far-fetched toward the end. Isn’t that always the case with books like this? I love the soap opera route at times. And this is no exception. In fact, the out-of-this-world situation is just so much fun. And I love that Billie goes through all the steps of what she’s doing to let us know that some of this really is possible—just don’t try it at home, folks!

Billie is filled with flaws. Yet, at the heart of her, she’s a good person. She wants to do the right thing, but she can’t always figure out what that is. All she knows is that people deserve justice. Think of her as kind of like The Equalizer but without the team and without her head screwed on fully.

Don’t believe everything Billie tells you, though. She’s purposely keeping a few things from the readers as she tells her story. Things can get a little complicated toward the end, but the attention you pay to the story will be worth it.
