Why is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 5 the last?

Prime Video has announced that The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 5 is happening. The bad news is that it’s the last season. Why is this the case?

We got the great news just hours before the premiere of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 4. There will be another season of the series.

That good news did come with some bad news. Season 5 is going to be the last. It’s not canceled, though. The series is ending.

Why is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel coming to an end?

The ending to The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is something the series creators have discussed time and time again. They know an endgame is needed. This isn’t a series now that can just be canceled. We need to see how it all ends for Midge. Will she get that career of her dreams?

However, it sounds like the pandemic has played a part. Filming for the fourth season was delayed, and that led to a two-year wait for Season 4 to get to us. While there won’t be delays for the fifth season because of the pandemic (unless something crazy happens!), there is still that knowledge that anything can disrupt filming.

Rather than run the risk of Prime Video “unrenewing” shows and canceling due to the time it takes to get the series to the platform, it looks like the creators have made a decision to wrap the story up.

At the same time, the creators did say they didn’t want to “overstay [their] welcome.” That makes it clear that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino know that shows need to end on a high. There’s no point dragging out a story just to keep it making money. This isn’t a case of the week or monster of the week format that works for the likes of NCIS and Supernatural to keep the shows going. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel needs a clear end up, and needs to avoid wasting time to get there.
