5 best Amazon movies for the weekend
Book of Love
The new Amazon Original rom-com Book of Love is now available to stream.
The Sam Claflin-led film sees him portraying an author, Henry, whose latest novel is a failure. He finds out that it is a hit in Mexico and heads there for a book tour to promote it. When he finds out the reason for its success, he is livid. Maria (Verónica Echegui) is the Spanish translator who, upon translating the book, has added to the story. And she didn’t add just anything; she created an erotic storyline add just the touch of spice to make the book a hit.
Henry’s publicist sends the pair out to promote the book, and this will become a charming romantic comedy.
Freakanomics
Another one of the new Amazon movies is the 2010 film Freakanomics. Based on the book written by economist Steven D. Levitt and writer Stephen J. Dubner titled Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything.
This documentary explores the hidden side of human nature using science and economics. It has been described as a melding of pop culture with economics. The popularity of the original book has led to a multi-media franchise consisting of a sequel book, this film, a radio segment on NPR, a weekly blog, and a podcast.
This is a great one for out-of-the-box thinkers that like to learn things they didn’t know they needed to know.
Manchester By the Sea
The drama Manchester By the Sea stars Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, and Lucas Hedges. The film is directed by Kenneth Lonergan, who co-wrote Gangs of New York.
Affleck plays Lee, an asocial janitor living in Quincy, Massachusetts. When his brother unexpectedly dies, Lee is charged with caring for his teenage nephew, Patrick (Hedges). He takes up temporary residency in Manchester, where he used to live, but moved away after a tragic accident. The story follows the pair as they reconnect and decide what their future holds.
The Missing
The film The Missing is classified as a Revisionist Wester or anti-western that uses realism to show a less simplistic view of the “Old West.”
Directed by Ron Howard, this film sees an estranged father/daughter duo, Samuel and Maggie, who are forced to team up to find Maggie’s daughter, Lily, kidnapped by Apache rebels. The story follows the pair as they learn to reconcile their past to ensure Lily’s safe return.
The film has a fantastic cast consisting of Tommy Lee Jones, Cate Blanchett, Evan Rachel Wood, Jenna Boyd, Eric Schweig. Aaron Eckhart, Val Kilmer, Elizabeth Moss, Steve Reevis, Jay Tavare, and Simon Baker.
Forrest Gump
You’ve probably watched this one many times before, but Forrest Gump is always a great movie to watch. Loosely based on the novel of the same name by Winston Groom, the story follows the titular character, played by Tom Hanks, through several decades of his life.
The film features many iconic moments in history in the 20th century. Throughout the film, we see Forrest from a young age well into his manhood as the viewer experiences life through his eyes. He is a slow-witted, kind-hearted man whose journey will make you cry, laugh and cry again.
The all-star cast includes Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson, Sally Field, Dick Cavett, and this is the film debut of Haley Joel Osment.
