5 best Amazon movies for the weekend
A Hero
Brand new to Amazon Prime Video is the Iranian film A Hero. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. A Hero is directed by two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi.
Amir Jadidi portrays Rahim in this film, a man who has been imprisoned for being unable to repay a debt. When he is given a two-day leave, he attempts to persuade his creditor to clear his debt so he can restart his life, but things don’t go as planned.
The Tomorrow War
The Tomorrow War is an Amazon original military sci-fi film released in 2021. The film stars Chris Pratt as biology teacher and Green Beret, Dan Forester. Additional cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, J. K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Jasmine Mathews, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Keith Powers.
Forester is drafted into military service after soldiers from 2051 arrive in the present to report an alien invasion in 2048. He and the other draftees are sent into the future to battle the aliens before they take over the planet.
It is a great action flick, especially for those who love sci-fi.
Shallow Hal
The comedy Shallow Hal is directed by the Farrelly Brothers, who brought us Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary. The humor in this film follows the vein of those movies.
Hal Larson (Jack Black), on the advice of his dying father, will only date women who are what is considered “physically perfect.” This, of course, leads to many rejections. When he meets life coach Tony Robbins, and Robbins discovers how shallow Hal is, he hypnotizes Hal only to see inner beauty.
His new outlook on dating leads to all sorts of comedic drama, especially when his best friend, who also has Hal’s outlook about women, meddles in Hal’s decisions.
The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jason Alexander, Joe Viterelli, Susan Ward, Molly Shannon, Bruce McGill, and Darius Rucker.
Ace Ventura
If you are in the mood for something goofy, check out the Ace Ventura movies starring Jim Carey. The first film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and its sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, are both streaming on Amazon Prime.
Carrey portrays the unusual pet detective Ace Ventura and despite his unorthodox ways is able to solve cases of the missing animals. The first film finds Ace as he searches for the Miami Dolphin’s mascot Snowflake. The second film finds him traveling to the fictional African country of Nibia to assist the consulate of Bonai Province to find the Great White Bat Shikaka.
It is a nonsense comedy that is highly entertaining.
Mission Impossible
Make it an action-packed weekend with a Mission Impossible binge. Amazon currently has Mission: Impossible (1996), Mission: Impossible II (2000), Mission: Impossible III (2006),
and Mission: Impossible IV Ghost Protocol (2011) available to stream.
The Mission Impossible films are a series of action spy films starring Tom Cruise as Agent Ethan Hunt of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). The movie picked up six years after the original TV series of the same name left off. Hunt, Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) are the main characters in the films. The IMF work to stop an enemy force to prevent a global disaster.
