Charlie runs a bar and very quickly welcomes J.R. into the world of the colorful regulars. This becomes the family J.R. didn’t think he’d get, which helps him succeed when it comes to becoming a novelist.
But is the movie based on a true story? It was written based on J.R. Moehringer’s memoir. That memoir was based on his life growing up, so yes, you can say that The Tender Bar is based on a true story.
Of course, there are elements that will be changed for drama and storytelling purposes. However, this inspirational story is one that really happened, and it’s worth watching just for that.
The movie has received mixed reviews, but that’s not surprising with something that is character-driven. Ben Affleck has been praised for his work, though.
