5 best movies on Amazon Prime Video this weekend
Sleepless In Seattle
The movie Sleepless In Seattle is another movie that features Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The first film they starred in is 1990s Joe Verus the Volcano and would later star in You’ve Got Mail and Ithica. These two always have great chemistry.
Sleepless In Seattle is a romantic comedy about Sam (Hanks), a widower who moves to Seattle with his son Jonah (Ross Mallinger). One night his son calls in to a talk radio show looking for a new wife for his father. A reporter in Baltimore, Annie (Ryan), hears the broadcast and realizes she needs to know more about this remarkable man.
When Sam receives countless letters from women who heard the radio show and want to meet him, Jonah picks out Annie’s letter as the one his father should meet. This leads to a beautiful must-see meet-cute.
The Song of Lunch
The Song of Lunch, an adaptation of Christopher Reid’s open, brings Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson together once again. We’ve seen them together in Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually, and the Harry Potter movies. Thompson’s husband, Greg Wise, serves as executive producer for this film.
This time the pair play two former lovers who, after 15 years, reunite in what has been called the Love Actually sequel we needed to see about Harry and Karen. The film has a run time of 48 minutes, and since it is a poem adaptation, the movie relies more on what is not said than actual dialogue.
It is definitely worth the quick watch!
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Based on Deborah Moggach’s novel, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a British comedy-drama directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love).
A group of British retirees decided to move to Jaipur, India, to stay at what is advertised as an exotic retirement home called Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Upon arrival, they are met by the enthusiastic manager Sonny (Dev Patel) and a hotel that doesn’t live up to what was advertised.
The retirees make the best of their situation and discover that their lives can be complete again once they let go of the past.
Starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Tom Wilkinson, and Maggie Smith. And, if you like this film, there is a sequel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Edward Scissorhands
Tim Burton brings us a wonderful story in the film Edward Scissorhands. Released in 1990, this film stars many great actors including Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Vincent Price, and Alan Arkin.
Depp plays the titular character created by a scientist (Price), but he could not complete his creation before his death. Edward is left with scissor blades for his hands and spends his days alone until saleswoman Peg (West) discovers him alone in the Gothic mansion of the scientist. Peg did what any mother would do; she took him into her home with loving arms.
Despite Peg and her family’s acceptance of Edward and his appearance, he encounters hardship and ridicule.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Don’t knock it until you try it. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a great dark fantasy action film. The film is directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and is an adaptation of the mash-up novel by Seth Grahame-Smith.
This film’s title tells you all you need to know. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is secretly a vampire hunter. As a child, Lincoln’s mother is bitten by a vampire, and he is rescued by a vampire hunter who teaches him the skills he needs to exact revenge for his mother’s death.
