There are so many great movies on Amazon Prime Video throughout December. It’s certainly going to make the month overwhelming, especially with all the Christmas movies you’ll want to watch at the same time.

This is why we shorten the list to just the top five picks. And they’re spaced throughout the month to give you time to watch everything.

The list is in release date order, and all Amazon Originals are marked with the asterisks.

5 must-watch movies on Amazon in December 2021

Edward Scissorhands

The first movie on the list is an oldie but a goodie. Edward Scissorhands will certainly get you in the mood for Christmas, especially with the ending. It will also make you long for compassion and love like is shown in the movie.

It all starts with Edward being found by Peg. He is completely different to the people around him, mostly due to the scissors he has as hands. Initially adored by many due to his skills with his scissors, he becomes an outcast and viewed as a threat. Is there any hope for him?

Encounter*

If you love sci-fi, Encounter is one of the must-watch movies on Amazon next month. Riz Ahmed (yes, Sound of Metal star) is a decorated Marine on a recuse mission. This is personal for him. He needs to save his young sons from a mysterious threat.

His two boys will need to leave their childhoods behind. They’ll grow up quickly as they face untold dangers every step of the way when they’re reunited with their dad.

Theory of Everything

You know about Stephen Hawking. He’s a genius, but you likely only really know his later years. What about his earlier life? Theory of Everything gives us a look at Hawking’s life in the 1960s when he learns about his motor neuron disease.

Hawking falls in love with Jane Wilde. He’s also an ambitious man, and time is not on his side. So he and Jane will need to do everything they can in a much shorter space of time than ever considered. This is Hawking’s story.

Being the Ricardos*

There are some celebrity couples who will stand out for great reasons. Then there are others that will stand out for difficult or bad reasons. When it comes to Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, their relationship stood out due to cultural taboos, political smears, and other outside forces that threatened their relationship.

Just how did they become Hollywood’s power couple? What happened behind the scenes? That’s something Being the Ricardos looks into through a fictional telling of the story.

Yearly Departed*

Technically, this is a special rather than a movie. However, it is just one “episode” to watch, so we’re counting it as a movie. And it’s certainly something to watch at the end of the month.

Yearly Departed started in 2020 as a way to say goodbye to everything that terrible year gave us. It’s not like 2021 has been that much better, so we’re getting another special with our favorite female comedians saying another hilarious goodbye. What are they saying goodbye to this time?
