5 must-watch movies on Amazon for September 1, 2021

In Her Shoes

The comedy-drama from 2005, In Her Shoes, stars Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette as sisters with Shirley Maclaine as their grandmother. The sisters couldn’t be more different.

Rose (Collette) is the elder who is a responsible lawyer and is very protective of her free-spirited younger sisters Maggie (Diaz). Maggie cannot hold a job, partially due to her dyslexia, and tends to use men for emotional and financial support. After Rose allows Maggie to move in with her and Maggie inevitably messes it up, she travels to Florida to seek out their estranged grandmother.

The movie follows the sisters and their relationship with the grandmother they never knew and their challenges upon learning more about their family. It is a cute, charming film, and the three actresses have great chemistry. Check this one out!

Love & Friendship

Love & Friendship is a period comedy based on the epistolary novel Lady Susan by Jane Austen. The story follows newly windowed Lady Susan and her goal to secure wealthy husbands for herself and her daughter.

Kate Beckinsale plays the role of Lady Susan, who, upon the death of the husband, realizes she will need to find a wealthy husband to keep up the lavish lifestyle she is accustomed to. Her daughter is also in need of a wealthy husband after she has been expelled from boarding school. They take up residence in the home of her brother-in-law Charles Vernon. She meets Reginald DeCourcy, younger brother to her sister-in-law Catherine, who Lady Susan and her flirtatious ways enchant.

It is a dizzying tale of one woman who is the queen of schemes and keeps everyone guessing her next move. Beckinsale is outstanding in this film, and the rest of the cast plays along with her making it a wonderful period film that is a self-aware film that feels a bit like a caper.

Summer ’03

This raunchy coming-of-age comedy is outstanding. Summer ’03 isn’t one of the predictable comedies where you know what it’s coming next. This one will keep you guessing.

Jamie (Joey King) is a 16 yr old who, along with her family, experience the death of her grandmother and deal with the aftermath of secrets she revealed on her deathbed. That, compounded with normal teenage troubles and growing pains, makes for an exciting summer for Jamie.

The film also stars Jack Kilmer, Andrea Savage, Erin Darke, Kelly Lamor Wilson, Stephen Ruffin, Paul Scheer and June Squibb.

I See You

The psychological horror film I See You is the story of a suburban family who experiences unexplainable events linked to the disappearance of a young boy.

Greg Harper is the lead detective for the case a boy is abducted while riding his bike. A link to previous abductions results in a conviction. Then mysterious events start to occur in the home of the detective. As things progress, the events are explained and are not what the viewer thinks, and other evidence about the abductions comes to light.

The film stars Helen Hunt, Jon Tenney, Judah Lewis, Owen Teague and Libe Barer.

House

Since it is the beginning of September, it is never too early to start your horror binge-watching for the Halloween season. House is a comedy horror from 1986 that has three sequels, with the first, of course, being the best.

A Vietnam veteran and horror writer inherits his aunt’s house and moves there to write his next novel. Instead of his usual horror, he decides to pen a novel about his time during the war. When he moves into the house that he spent much time in as a child, he starts to experience some bizarre things.

This film is a dark comedy filled with jump scares and is fun and weird—a great ’80s horror flick.
