Modern Love Season 2, Episode 8 recap: A second chance at love
A divorced couple gets a second chance at a relationship together in Modern Love Season 2, Episode 8. Will a medical problem prevent it from happening?
Co-parenting isn’t easy. That I can tell you, especially when there’s been an affair. That’s something Modern Love Season 2, Episode 6 gave us just a small look at. That episode also showed us the chance at second love with other people.
The final episode of Season 2 focused on a different type of second chance. What if the relationship breakdown wasn’t due to affairs or animosity? While we don’t get a full sense of everything that happened in the breakdown of Van and Liz’s marriage, we get a sense that it was due to Van’s immaturity. He just didn’t step up when he needed to.
After divorce, he had to step up in ways he didn’t realize before. He became better at being a father to their children and just at life in general. One thing that never disappeared was their love for each other.
A second chance together in Modern Love Season 2, Episode 8
After dinner together, Van and Liz end up reminiscing about their first flat (that’s apartment in the UK). They reconnect and laugh together, and that leads to Van sleeping over. Of course, the next morning, he has to sneak out of the flat, with Liz telling him there’s a two-hour period on Tuesday where she doesn’t have the kids.
They start of up this “affair,” a chance to rekindle their love. However, as Van tries to take things to the next level and tell her how much he loves her, Liz pulls away. She can’t bear to start the relationship again.
It’s not that she doesn’t love him. It turns out she has breast cancer, and it’s aggressive. She has to be aggressive, and she doesn’t want Van to be with her out of pity. He isn’t there for that reason. He wants to be with her.
Liz realizes that when she listens to the full voicemail Van left her when she left him at the restaurant. She hears that Van has stopped dating other women because he doesn’t want to pretend with them. He wants his ex-wife back.
When Liz realizes that her cancer is back, she asks to change her next of kin. She wants it to be Van. The episode ends with the two of them in the hospital room with Van giving Liz a ring. It’s not an engagement ring; just a gift and a promise that he is going to be there.
