5 good movies on Amazon for Hump Day: August 11, 2021

It’s Wednesday, and that means we are at the midweek hump heading to the weekend. Oftentimes it seems like the weekend is very far away, and we need something entertaining to get us there. Amazon is here is with many choices for your Hump Day entertainment.

Amazon’s list of August releases is an impressive list of more than 60 titles.  Included in this list are many great films from the ’90s. Titles include Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Hook, My Best Friends Wedding and Patriot Games. 

Below is a list of five movies to help with that Hump Day slump.

5 must-watch movies on Amazon for August 11, 2021

Val 

Val follows the life and career of actor Val Kilmer. Leo Scott and Ting Poo directed and produced this documentary and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in July.

Kilmer started his career in the mid-’80s, and one of the first films to really put him in the limelight was Top Gun. With his platinum blonde hair and chiseled jaw, he was propelled into the spotlight for his good looks and his great job in his role as Ice Man in that film.

This documentary is unique in that it uses footage that Kilmer filmed throughout this life and career. Kilmer’s battle with cancer caused him to lose his voice and requires him to speak through a voice box. In the footage, his son Jack, whom Kilmer dotes on, recites Kilmer’s narration for the film.

It is an interesting look into a long-spanning career which Rotten Tomatoes has given a 93% rating.

Tombstone

Speaking of Val Kilmer, Tombstone is one of his films that the actor has received critical acclaim. He convincingly portrayed the well-known gambler and gunfighter Doc Holiday.

The film is loosely based on the famous shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russel) and his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliott) and Morgan (Bill Paxton) decide to settle in Tombstone, where Wyatt’s long-time friend Doc Holiday lives.

The Earp brothers set up a profitable gambling hall and saloon. The story shows the altercations with the Cowboys, a group of outlaws, leading up to the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

The all-star cast includes Charlton Heston, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Thomas Haden Church, Dana Delany, Paula Malcomson, Michael Rooker, Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Zane, John Corbett with Robert Mitchum as narrator.

It’s a very entertaining western that has become a cult classic.

Like a Boss

The comedy Like a Boss was released in 2020, and although it didn’t receive much praise from critics, this is a fun film with a great cast.

Two friends, who couldn’t be more different, run their own cosmetics company. When they encounter a huge amount of debt, they enlist the financial help of an executive from a major cosmetics empire, who ultimately wants to steal their company. This requires the friends to put aside their difference to save their business.

The cast includes Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Coolidge, Billy Porter and Ryan Hansen.

Music

This musical drama, Music, was released in 2021 that singer-songwriter Sia directs. This marks Sia’s directorial debut. The film met with negative critical reviews, and Amazon viewers have given 51% five-star ratings.

The film follows the story of Zu (Kate Hudson), a recently sober drug dealer who, after the death of her grandmother, becomes the sole guardian of her nonverbal autistic sister, Music (Maddie Ziegler). The musical numbers are dance sequences that take place in Music’s mind, showing how she views the world.

The film also stars Leslie Odom Jr., Hector Elizondo, Tig Notaro, Juliette Lewis, Kathy Najimy, Henry Rollins and Sia plays Popstar Without Borders. The musical numbers are performed by Hudson, Odom Jr., Ziegler and Sia.

Honest Thief

The action-thriller Honest Thief is a wild ride of a film that you would expect from a movie starring Liam Neeson.

Neeson plays Tom Dolan, a former US Marine who has become a master thief. When he meets and falls in love with Annie (Kate Walsh), he decides to turn himself in, hoping to receive a reduced sentence so he can put his criminal past behind him. He is betrayed by the FBI agents he confesses to who plan to steal the large amount of cash Dolan has stashed away. When the agents attack Annie, Dolan springs into action to take down the agents who betrayed him.

The film also stars Robert Patrick, Anthony Ramos, Jeffrey Donovan and Jai Courtney.

Although the story may seem a bit familiar, it is a great action flick worth the watch.
