5 good movies on Amazon for July 21, 2021

Miss Sloane

This week, Miss Sloane was released on Amazon Prime. The 2016 political thriller follows lobbyist Elizabeth Stone (Jessica Chastain) and her campaign to fight gun control legislation. In the cutthroat world of politics, your personal life will always come to light, and anyone who opposes your views will use that against you. This film explores that vein and what someone is willing to give up to fight for what they believe in.

The film also stars Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alison Pill, Jake Lacy, John Lithgow, and Sam Waterston. The film received favorable reviews overall, but Chastain was highly praised for her performance in the movie.

Hector and the Search for Happiness

The comedy-drama Hector and the Search for Happiness follows a man who embarks on a journey around the globe to discover happiness. This film is based on a novel of the same name by Francois Lelord.

The film stars Simon Pegg as Hector. He is a psychologist who has realized how boring his life is. He tells his girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike) that he needs to travel to find happiness in his life. He travels the globe in search of something most people look for in their lives.

Also starring Stellan Skarsgård, Toni Collette, Jean Reno, Veronica Ferres, Barry Atsma, and Christopher Plummer, this film is a feel-good film that might help you find your own happiness.

Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day

Another film based on a novel is Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day has recently been added to Amazon’s catalog of films.  Winifred Watson penned this novel in 1938.

The setting for this romantic comedy is post-WWII London.  When governess Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is fired for the fourth time, she is at a loss about what to do next. She takes an assignment meant for a colleague, only to find this client doesn’t need a governess but rather a social secretary. Amy Adams plays the flamboyant American singer/actress Delysia Lafosse whose lifestyle shocks Miss Pettigrew.

The film follows the duo for a day as they actually “live for a day.” It is a fun, and romantic film with great bits of humor sprinkled in.

The film also stars Lee Pace, Tom Payne, Ciarán Hinds, Shirley Henderson, and Mark Strong.

Mall Rats

The 1995 comedy Mall Rats was written by Kevin Smith. This film is the second in Smith’s View Askewniverse after Clerks, although Mall Rats actually takes place the day before Clerks.

As with all films in Smith’s View Asewniverse, Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Smith, respectively) are prominent characters in this film. The film follows two friends who head to the mall after their girlfriends dump them. One of the girlfriends is starring in a dating game show that is being held at the mall. The boy’s main goal is to ruin the game show.

The film also stars Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, Priscilla Barnes, and Michael Rooker.

If you enjoyed Clerk’s, you will also enjoy this film which has quite a cult following.

Signs

The new film, Old, is set to release this week by M. Night Shyamalan, and it reminds me of some of his other great films. Signs, available on Amazon Prime, is a science fiction thriller that followed The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable films by Shyamalan.

This film follows a family whose patriarch Graham (Mel Gibson), a former priest, is experiencing major crossroads in his life. He lives with his son Morgan (Rory Culkin), his daughter Bo (Abigail Breslin) and his younger brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix). Graham discovers strange crop circles in his field, which leads to the discovery of extraterrestrial life on earth.

The film focuses on faith, family, and aliens. This may seem a strange combination, but this film is a great look into life when it throws you many unexpected curve balls.

Next. The Walking Dead Season 10 and more on DVD and Blu-ray this week. dark
