Based on the book series of the same name by Colson Whitehead, The Underground Railroad took us on a fictionalized journey across the Antebellum south. It follows a young slave girl, Cora, who manages to escape her plantation and finds out that the Underground Railroad isn’t a metaphor at all. There’s a real railroad underground that is designed to get slaves to freedom.
The series was billed as a limited series. That should mean there is only one season of the series. After all, it does tell the full story for the books, even if there are a few questions at the very end.
Being billed as a limited series doesn’t mean a series remains that way. We just have to look at Big Little Lies and the recent renewal of Good Omens to see that a limited series can end up being picked up for another season. So that could happen for The Underground Railroad if there is the willingness from everyone to continue the story.

Whether the series is renewed or not, we’ve got some bad news when it comes to the release date. The Underground Railroad Season 2 won’t come in 2021.
There simply isn’t enough time to get through all the stages of production now. Even if the show was renewed straight after the release of the first season, there wouldn’t be enough time to bring a second season before the year is finished. Amazon doesn’t release two seasons of the same show within one calendar year.
The earliest we’d get it now is summer 2022, but it doesn’t look like there are plans to change this show from being a limited series.
