5 great movies on Amazon Prime
Signs (2002)
M. Night Shyamalan is known for his supernatural and twist-ending films. Signs is one of his films that adds in a sci-fi element adding in extraterrestrials.
The film stars Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, and a five-year-old Abigail Breslin. Gibson plays a former priest and head of the Hess family, a widower taking care of his children Morgan (Culkin) and Bo (Breslin). He enlists the help of his younger brother Merrill (Phoenix), who moves in with the family.
We see flashbacks leading up to the death of Hess’s wife while at the same time the community is experiencing some strange events. They discover that strange events are happening worldwide, and this is something to take seriously.
It is a great film with faith and family undertones with some extraterrestrials thrown in.
Pinocchio
The 2020 version of Pinocchio is based on the 1883 book The Adventures of Pinocchio written by Carlo Collodi, an Italian author. This film was released on Amazon Prime on June 11.
Now, keep in mind this isn’t a Disney production. This version is slightly darker than you might expect, but it keeps with Collodi’s original story. Critics have given positive feedback regarding the filming and subtle effects of this unexpected version of a story many thought they knew well.
This film stars Roberto Benigni, Federico Ielapi, Rocco Papaleo, Massimo Ceccherini, Marine Vacth, and Gigi Proietti. Sadly, this was Proietti’s last film before his death in 2020.
This film is a little different, but that is what makes it interesting.
Almost Famous
This semi-autobiographical film, Almost Famous, is based on director Cameron Crowe’s experiences as a teen writer for Rolling Stone.
The film follows child prodigy William Miller (Patrick Fugit) and how he was hired to work for Rolling Stone at age 15. He follows the band Stillwater and befriends one of their groupies, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), who prefers to be called “band-aids,” girls there for the music and not the musicians. William experiences the wild and crazy rock star life while writing his cover article for the magazine.
Also starring Jason Lee, Frances McDormand, Patrick Fugit, Anna Paquin, Fairuza Balk, Noah Taylor, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
It is a great film set in the 70s, a great time for rock and roll. Be sure to also check out the soundtrack.
Addams Family Values
Addams Family Values is a sequel to the 1991 film based on the cartoon created by Charles Addams and the TV series from the 60s by David Levy.
The Addams Family comprises bizarre and macabre members who are extremely wealthy and oblivious to the fact that the average person finds them bizarre. They go about their off-beat lives, assuming what they do and how they act is perfectly normal.
The family is acted by Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Joan Cusack, Christina Ricci,
Jimmy Workman and Carol Kane.
If you are a fan of The Addams family, be sure to check this one out.
River’s Edge
The 1986 film River’s Edge is loosely based on the real-life murder of Marcy Renee Conrad in Milpitas, California, in 1981. This dark tale of a teen’s murder by a peer a the time of its release was considered “the darkest teen film of all time.”
The film looks at the lives of a group of teens consumed with drugs, alcohol, and bad home lives. These teens are indifferent to the fact that one of their friends was killed. It is said this is a film showing a moral breakdown in society.
The leader of the teens is played by Crispin Glover, whose character always seems to be on speed. He is joined by other names you will know, Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye Leitch, Roxana Zal, Daniel Roebuck, Joshua Miller, and a great performance by Dennis Hopper.
The film received positive reviews from critics, and Gene Siskel named it the seventh best film of 1987.
