Lovecraft Country Season 1 is available on DVD and Blu-ray later this month. Here’s a look at what to expect from the boxset.

Our friends at Warner Bros. kindly offered up a review copy of the Blu-ray release so we could offer an honest review.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, it’s time to remind you that Lovecraft Country Season 1 is on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, Feb. 16. That’s less than two weeks, and we know you’re excited to see what you’ll get. Is it worth getting the boxset when you already have HBO?

I do still think there’s a place for DVD and Blu-rays. I get a lot so I don’t have to rely on streaming services or my internet connection all the time. Plus, when I move house, I have something to watch while I’m waiting for the internet to be installed.

But what about Lovecraft Country Season 1? This is a DVD or Blu-ray you’ll need to buy. The Blu-ray comes with the digital code, so you get also get it online without your HBO subscription. Sadly, the digital code only works in the U.S.

What to expect on Lovecraft Country: The Complete First Season

Of course, all 10 episodes of the epic series from Misha Green are included on the boxsets. Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, Abbey Lee, Jamie Chung, Jada Harris, and Michael K. Williams star in the series, with Courtney B. Vance as a recurring guest star. It doesn’t matter if you get the DVD or the Blu-ray.

Sure, you’ve seen the episodes, but you’ll want to watch them over and over again. They are all in order:

  1. Sundown
  2. Whitey’s on the Moon
  3. Holy Ghost
  4. A History of Violence
  5. Strange Case
  6. Meet Me in Daegu
  7. I am.
  8. Jig-a-Bobo
  9. Rewind 1921
  10. Full Circle

As well as the episodes, you’ll also get some bonus material. Some of this is already available to watch online, and it includes:

  • Crafting Lovecraft Country
  • Exploring Lovecraft Country (eight featurettes)
  • Lovecraft Country The Craft (four featurettes)

Feeling a little disappointed? Wondering why you should get the DVD boxset when these featurettes are already available online? There are two new additions only on the DVD and Blu-ray collections:

  • Compendium of Horrors
  • Orithyia Blue and the Imagination of Diana Freeman

I love that the two bonus features focus on other characters from the world of the series. The supporting characters ended up becoming crucial to the overall story. They were pulled into the magical world through either their own actions or because of other people around them. Sometimes we weren’t sure which side they would end up on.

The supporting characters got episodes of their own, which isn’t normal in a 10-episode first season. It showed that while they were billed as more supporting roles, they were still essential to the story. They were characters to watch out for, and the actors will certainly pull you into other shows in the future.

The complete first season is available for pre-order on Amazon right now. It’s also available at all other retailers. The original price is set as $29.98 for the DVD and $39.99 for the Blu-ray with Digital code.
