The Expanse: Why would Filip save Naomi?

Why did Filip feel the need to save Naomi on The Expanse Season 5?

Filip is a relatively unknown character when it comes to The Expanse. We don’t really know what he’s capable of or what his motivations are. There seems to be a heart to him, though. After all, he saved Naomi from certain death on the Roci.

At the start of The Expanse Season 5, Naomi went out in search of her son. It didn’t take too long to find him, but she got more than she bargained for. He didn’t want to know her, but he did kidnap her and take her into space with him.

On The Expanse Season 5, Episode 5, Filip tells Naomi that he saved her life. Sure enough, the drives on the Roci have been encrypted. Had she been on it with Holden, she would have had no idea and the ship would have blown up, killing them both. By Filip taking her, she was able to figure out the terrors that awaited the Roci and got a message to Holden before it was too late.

But we don’t have a reason for him doing that just yet. Why would he have saved a woman he didn’t really know too well?

Marco shares the likely reason

Naomi has the same question. In fact, a few people do on The Expanse Season 5, but Marco seems to have figured it out.

Like so many other children, he needs his mom. At the end of the day, blood is thicker than water.

Filip may not know Naomi, but he knows of her. He would have heard stories, whether good or bad. As much as he hates her for what he feels like was abandoning him, he doesn’t want her dead.

He may also want some answers from her. Maybe he does want to know why, exactly, she left him. Maybe he wants to get to know the person she really is instead of the stories he’s heard.

Filip may not even know why he saved her on The Expanse

As he thinks about his actions, he may not know why he chose to save Naomi. As humans, we can act without a reason. At least, without a reason we fully understand.

All we know is something inside of us has told us to do something. Something in Filip has told him to save Naomi’s life, and he’s gone with that gut feeling.

He doesn’t fully understand why yet.

Is it possible that he doesn’t feel Marco is being completely honest. This isn’t the place to assess Marco’s actions, but I do wonder how much he’s doing specifically for the Belt and how much he’s doing just for his own power and grandeur. Does Filip wonder the same thing?

If something goes wrong, Naomi would be the person to have by his side. She would be the one who could bring in the cavalry and save the day. She’s done it before, right?

I do think it’s mostly that she’s his mom. No matter what family does to us, there’s this loyalty we tend to have, especially when it comes to not even knowing a parent.
